HOUSES FOR THE NEEDY

Needy families in Couva and environs moved closer to realizing their dream of new homes thanks to the generosity of Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited. This was highlighted at the sod turning ceremony held at home owners Ramroop and Joan Sookram’s property to mark the construction phase of a housing project HOMES (Housing Our Most Exposed Siblings) launched by Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited in 2006.

In commemoration of its 13 year safety record of no lost work day case, PPGPL presented a Gift to the Nation by donating M$1.57TT to Habitat for Humanity T&T for the construction of 20 houses in the company’s fence line communities. Families in Dow Village, Califorina, Couva, Phoenix Park and Claxton Bay are expected to benefit from this project which will be completed by September 2007.

Both the Chairman of HFHTT, Chanka Seeteram and the National Coordinator Ms. Jennifer Massiah, thanked the contribution made by this energy company and looked forward to the support of other corporate citizens in partnering with Habitat to achieve its mission of building communities one house at a time. Ms. Massiah went further to say that with continued support there should come a time when there is no longer a need for Habitat housing, but that time is till far away.

As Eugene Tiah shared his company’s philosophy of assuming its social responsibility, he called on other businesses to take on similar projects either by donating to HFHTT or adopting a school or a cause to restore the social fabric of the country. When elaborating on the project he emphasised that in addition to funding, employees were also contributing sweat equity as part of its agreement with HFHTT.

HFHTT is an Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International which has built over 200,000 houses and served approximately 1,000,000 persons in over 3,000 communities around the world. The organisation greatly relies on donations and volunteers to help construct simple and affordable houses for poorly sheltered families. Families pay for the houses at cost using long-term mortgages at no interest or profit to the organisation.

The focus of the organisation for the next 3-5 years is to partner with other companies and NGOs to serve approximately 500 families in Trinidad and Tobago. The mission of providing simple, decent shelter and building community relationships is the goal the organisation has set for itself.
