Committed to Excellence

In its fifteen years PPGPL’s Leadership Team has taken deliberate actions that have set the company on a continuous drive for excellence.

The pursuit of excellence in PPGPL begins with the company’s business excellence model, adopted from the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). This excellence model is based on nine criteria for achieving excellence within a company. The model is structured into five “Enablers” and four “Results” with the “Enabler” criteria describing what an organisation does, and the “Result” criteria covering what an organisation achieves. The model, which recognizes there are many approaches to delivering sustainable excellence in all aspects of performance is based on the premise that “Excellent results with respect to Performance, Customers, People and Society are achieved through Leadership driving Policy and Strategy, People, Partnerships and Resources, and Processes”.

In keeping with the business excellence model, PPGPL has accepted and adopted the fundamental concepts of excellence of the model as detailed in each criterion as listed hereunder:

Results Orientation: Excellence is achieving results that delight all PPGPL’s stakeholders.

Customer Focus: Excellence is creating sustainable customer value.

Leadership and Constancy of Purpose: Excellence is visionary and inspirational leadership, coupled with constancy of purpose.

Management by Processes and Facts: Excellence is managing the organisation through a set of interdependent and interrelated systems, processes and facts.
People development and Involvement: Excellence is maximizing the contribution of employees through their development and involvement.

Continuous Learning, Innovation and Improvement: Excellence is challenging the status quo and effecting change by using learning to create innovation and improvement opportunities.

Partnership Development: Excellence is developing and maintaining value-added partnerships.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Excellence is exceeding the minimum regulatory framework in which the organisation operates and to strive to understand and respond to respond to the expectations of their stakeholders in society.
Arising from the model, the company has instituted several systems to continuously ensure that its journey to excellence continues. Among those systems which the company uses on a structured continuous basis are the following:

The Employee Benchmarking System (EBS)
The Plant Benchmarking System
Business Relationship Survey
The Customer and Supplier Survey
Self Assessment
 

As a result of its successful initiatives in March, 2006, PPGPL was adjudged as “Committed to Excellence” in Europe by the EFQM. This award was the first of its kind for a Caribbean business organisation. The Committed to Excellence Award by the EFQM was designed for organisations at the beginning of their journey to Excellence. The process involved PPGPL conducting a Self Assessment which provided a broad overview of performance against the framework of the EFQM Model. The output of the Self Assessment was used to identify improvement areas relevant in the Company. By demonstrating to an external Assessor from the EFQM that improvement actions were deployed, PPGPL was granted the Committed to Excellence award.

PPGPL recognizes that the journey to excellence is neither easy nor ever complete. It is a continuous journey of improvement, innovation and learning. PPGPL has sought ideas from the best and have improved those ideas. PPGPL has faltered and got up and gone again. The lesson in seeking excellence that we at PPGPL have learned, is never give up. Also, when the organisation thinks that it is at its best, it is that time, to again seek for excellence.
